In their own words: Singaporeans and their financial goals

Me and my wife wanted to make sure that we could provide a comfortable and secure life for our children, even with only one income. We discussed our budget, our savings, our investments, and our contingency plans. We also set some financial goals, such as owning a house, saving for retirement, and having an emergency fund. Lastly, we agreed that we would review our financial situation regularly and make adjustments as needed.

Like many of our peers, settling our HDB loan is currently one of our biggest financial commitments. Our goal is to pay it off in five years so that we can focus more on planning for our retirement. To us, the most ideal form of retirement is having enough money to take care of ourselves while having room to pursue other interests like travelling and volunteering. For anyone with a similar goal of relaxing in their golden years, I'd recommend starting to save today to make use of compound interest.
While [my husband] and I have money invested, the CPF interest rates of up to 5% are a safe return that we feel helps us build our retirement nest egg — and sleep better at night."
