CareShield Life is universal and mandatory for the following groups:
- Singapore Citizens or Permanent Residents born in 1980 or later, are automatically enrolled on 1 October 2020, or when they turn 30, regardless of any pre-existing conditions or disabilities.
- Singapore Citizens or Permanent Residents born between 1970 and 1979 were automatically enrolled from 1 December 2021 if they were covered under ElderShield 400 and had not developed severe disability at the point of auto-enrollment.
- Foreigners who become Singapore Citizens or Permanent Residents from 1 October 2020 onwards and are born in 1979 or earlier are automatically enrolled provided they have no severe disability (if granted residency from 1 October 2020 to 31 December 2025). From 1 January 2026, automatic enrolment applies only to those with no disability at all.
The scheme is made mandatory to ensure that all Singaporeans, including those who are more vulnerable such as the lower-income group and those with pre-existing severe disabilities, have basic protection for long-term care needs. The Government will support Singaporeans who are unable to afford their premiums, so that no one loses their coverage due to financial difficulties.
If you were not automatically enrolled, you can
apply to join CareShield Life. A 60-day free-look period applies from the start of coverage, after which you will not be able to terminate your coverage.
