Under what circumstances can I apply to defer the repayment under the CPF Education Loan Scheme?

Upon notification of the repayment start date for your CPF education loan, you may apply to defer the repayment if you meet any of the following conditions:

  1. Currently studying full-time either locally or overseas; or
  2. Serving full-time National Service; or
  3. Currently unemployed.

Defer repayment or lower monthly instalment rate due to financial difficulties

If you are experiencing financial difficulties repaying your education loan, you may submit a request to either defer your repayment or repay at a lower monthly instalment rate for up to one year. You may submit the request through ‘My Mailbox’ with the following information:

  • Reason for deferment or repayment through a lower monthly instalment rate;
  • Declare that you have sought the lending CPF member’s consent to defer the repayment or repay at a lower monthly instalment rate;
  • Indicate the full name and NRIC of the lending CPF member and the loan that you want to defer or repay at a lower instalment rate.

Impact of deferring a repayment under the CPF Education Loan Scheme

Please note that the maximum 12-year repayment period will be reduced by the period of deferment granted. For example, if you have 12 years for repayment and has successfully applied to defer the repayment for two years, the remaining maximum repayment period is 10 years after the deferment has ended.

The monthly repayment amount may also be increased when the deferment period has ended so as to enable you to fully repay the outstanding loan within the remaining repayment period.

As interest on the outstanding loan amount will continue to accrue during the deferment period, you are encouraged to start repayment as soon as you have the ability to do so. You can approach us to end the deferment earlier and to start repayment any time.
