UnderstandWho is a Self-Employed Person (SEP)?
A Self-Employed Person (SEP) is any individual who performs work for others (e.g. provide a service) under a contract for service.

If you earn an income by buying and selling goods or from providing professional or personal services, you are an SEP. Examples of SEPs include hawkers, taxi drivers, freelancers, sole proprietors or a partner in a partnership.

Visit the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (IRAS) website to read more on the definition of an SEP.
Self-Employed Matters16431643
UnderstandHow much MediSave do I need to contribute as a Self-Employed Person (SEP)?
All Self-Employed Persons (SEPs) who are Singapore Citizens or Permanent Residents and earn an annual Net Trade Income (NTI) of more than $6,000 need to contribute to MediSave.

NTI is your gross trade income minus all allowable business expenses, capital allowances and trade losses as determined by the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (IRAS).

Your MediSave contribution depends on your age and annual Net Trade Income (NTI). Use the Self-Employed MediSave Contribution Calculator to calculate the amount of MediSave to contribute or refer to the MediSave contribution rates for Self-Employed Persons (PDF, 0.1MB).

Self-Employed Matters16441644
UnderstandHow will I know how much MediSave to contribute?
If you have declared your Net Trade Income (NTI) to the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (IRAS), you will receive their Notice of Computation of CPF Contributions (MediSave) stating the amount of MediSave payable.

If you have declared your NTI to the Board using FORM IRAS 144, we will send you a notification (SES/IRAS144) informing you of your MediSave payable.

When is the deadline to make my MediSave contributions?

You are required to contribute to your MediSave within 30 days of the date of issuance of the Notice of Computation (NOC) from IRAS, or within 30 days of the date of issuance of the notification from CPF Board informing you of your MediSave payable (SES/IRAS144).

Self-Employed Matters16451645
EvaluateWhy do I need to contribute to my MediSave?
Self- Employed Persons (SEPs), unlike employees, do not receive regular MediSave contributions from employers. It is therefore important for you to contribute regularly to ensure that you have enough MediSave savings for your healthcare needs. The savings in your MediSave Account will be especially important during old age, when you may have stopped working.

When you contribute to MediSave, you enjoy:

Up to 6% interest per annum on your MediSave savings

Savings in the MediSave Account earn 4% interest per annum, and the first $60,000 of your combined CPF balances earns an additional 1% interest per annum. Members aged 55 and above will also enjoy an additional 1% interest per annum on the first $30,000 of your combined CPF balance from 1 January 2016.

Tax relief of up to 37% of your annual NTI, or the CPF Annual Limit of $37,740, whichever is lower

Use of MediSave savings for
- Healthcare expenses for yourself and your family
- Premium payment for MediShield Life (a medical insurance scheme for serious or prolonged illnesses) or MediSave-approved private integrated plans

Hassle-free licence renewal and application

You may also be eligible for Workfare Income Supplement (WIS) payouts of up to $2,667 annually. Find out more on WIS here.
Self-Employed Matters16461646
EvaluateBesides MediSave, can I contribute to my other CPF Accounts?
Yes, you can also make cash or CPF contributions to your other CPF accounts through the following methods.

Method

Remarks

1.

Making voluntary contributions

You can make cash contributions to all three accounts – Ordinary (OA), Special (SA) and MediSave (MA). The portion that goes to the MA will offset your MediSave payable as a Self-Employed.

2.

Transfer your OA savings to your SA or Retirement Account (RA)

If you have excess savings in your OA, you can transfer them to your SA if you are below 55 years old or your RA if you are 55 years old and above to earn interest of 4% per year.

3.

Retirement Sum Topping-Up Scheme (RSTU)

You can make cash contributions to your loved ones’ or your own SA or RA. ApplyHow can I make my Medisave contributions?
There are several ways you can make your MediSave contributions.

The most convenient way is via GIRO, which allows automatic monthly deductions from your bank account. You may apply to pay via GIRO online (if you have a bank account from OCBC/ DBS/ POSB) or by mail (for other banks).

The payment options are:

Payment mode

Details

GIRO

Online using my cpf Online Services

Log in with your SingPass.

Submit the “Apply / Change GIRO for Mandatory MediSave Contributions and Voluntary Contributions by Self-Employed Person” application.

Check your GIRO application status via My Activities.

Mail

Download and complete the "Apply for GIRO for Mandatory Contributions or Voluntary Contributions" form (FORM GIRO SE/VC (PDF, 0.6MB)).

Mail it to the address printed overleaf of the GIRO application form.

We will notify you of your GIRO application status once the bank has processed it.

e-Cashier

PayNow QR

eNETS Debit – payment by Citibank, DBS/POSB, OCBC, Standard Chartered Bank or United Overseas Bank internet banking

NETS/ CashCard

Pay by NETS or CashCard at any SingPost branches

Pay by NETS at any AXS Machine

The service standard for processing electronic payment is as follows:

For payment via PayNow QR, your payment will be processed almost immediately.

For payment via eNETS Debit, your payment will be processed within the next working day.

Login with your SingPass to check on the transaction status:

Check that your MediSave contribution is reflected in My Statement, or

Check the transaction status under My Activities (if you paid via e-Cashier)

Self-Employed Matters16501650
