Understand What is MediShield?
MediShield is a basic medical insurance scheme designed to help with large hospitalisation bills as well as certain outpatient treatments at approved medical institutions. It targets Class B2 and C wards and subsidised treatment in public hospitals.

MediShield covers CPF members and their immediate family members (i.e. spouse, parents, children or grandparents). Members and their family members are covered individually under the scheme.

From 1 November 2015, MediShield will be replaced by MediShield Life. The new MediShield Life will:

Offer better protection and higher payouts, so that patients pay less Medisave/cash for large bills,

Cover all Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents, including the very elderly and those who have pre-existing illnesses,

Offer protection for life.

You can read more at www.medishieldlife.sg.
MediShield16671667
UnderstandWhat are the benefits under MediShield?
MediShield covers hospitalisation expenses and certain approved outpatient treatments, such as kidney dialysis, chemotherapy and radiotherapy for cancer treatment.

You can read more on the MediShield benefits and claim limits and the medical institutions participating in MediShield.
MediShield16781678

Singaporeans will be able to pay for their MediShield Life premiums fully using Medisave, inclusive of any Additional Premiums and net of any subsidies. For those with Integrated Shield Plans (IPs), there will be the new Additional Withdrawal Limits (AWLs) to enable members to use Medisave, up to a cap, to pay the additional premiums for the private insurance component of IPs. The AWLs apply on top of the amount of Medisave used for MediShield Life premiums.

For more information on AWLs, please visit here.
MediShield16761676
UnderstandHow do I claim from MediShield?
You can claim from MediShield through the hospital by informing them that you are insured under this scheme and wish to make a claim. The hospital will submit your claim to us.

After determining the amount payable from MediShield, we will make payment directly to the hospital. You only need to cover the remaining amount, which can be covered by Medisave or cash.

You can view the details of your Medisave withdrawals and MediShield claims for the past 15 months via our website under "my cpf Online Services".

You can read more from Online Medisave and MediShield Claim Statements.
MediShield16771677
UnderstandHow much can I claim from MediShield?
You will have to cover the deductible and co-insurance portions of your bill, which can be paid for using Medisave or cash. MediShield comes in to cover the remaining amount, subject to prevailing claim limits.

You can find out more about deductible, co-insurance, and see examples of MediShield claim computation.

You can also use our Medisave / MediShield Calculator to estimate how much you can claim.
MediShield16791679
UnderstandWhat are the exclusions under MediShield?
MediShield does not cover certain treatments such as cosmetic surgery, overseas medical treatment, delivery charges, etc.

You can refer to the exclusions under the MediShield scheme for more details.
MediShield16801680
EvaluateIs MediShield enough to pay for my medical expenses?
MediShield is designed to cover medical expenses (excluding the deductible and co-insurance) for stay in Class B2 / C wards at public hospitals. You will get the same level of benefits, pegged to the estimated B2/C class expenses, if you choose to stay in a B1/A class ward or in private hospitals.

For the rest of your bill which is not covered by MediShield, you will need to pay with Medisave and/or cash.

It is therefore important to choose a ward or medical service that you can afford. For a rough estimate on the medical charges, you can:

check the hospital bill sizes by medical condition/procedure at the Ministry of Health (MOH) website.

use the Medisave / MediShield Calculator to estimate how much you can claim.

MediShield16811681
EvaluateWhat if I prefer to stay in Class A / B1 wards or private hospitals?
You can sign up for an Integrated Shield Plan (IP), managed by a private insurer, if you want additional coverage of bills in higher class wards or in private hospitals.

IPs comprise 2 parts: (i) MediShield and (ii) a top-up portion providing additional coverage for the additional expenses in private hospitals or Class A/B1 wards in public hospitals.

However, IP premiums are higher than MediShield. So consider these questions if you are wondering if you should buy an IP or continue with it, if you already have one:

Do you wish to stay in a private ward and to choose your own doctor?

Can you afford your Integrated Shield Plan premiums in the long term?

You can read more details on Integrated Shield Plans.
MediShield16821682

Your MediShield cover will continue to run.
MediShield16731673
ApplyHow can I apply for MediShield for myself or my dependants before MediShield Life is introduced?
From 1 November 2015, MediShield Life will replace MediShield to provide lifetime coverage for all Singaporeans. All Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents will automatically be covered and there is no need to apply. This includes those currently covered by MediShield, IPs, and the uninsured. You will receive letters from the CPF Board or your private insurers on matters concerning MediShield Life and IPs.

CPF Board will not be accepting new applications for MediShield from now as there is a waiting period of up to 3 months during which no claims are payable under the current scheme. By then, MediShield Life cover would have started.
MediShield16841684
